Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most intriguing places on earth. It is sometimes referred to as the eighth wonder of the world. Its unique features are due to the fact that it is a true crater, formed when a volcano collapsed on itself. The resulting geological formation created a ring of hills surrounding an expansive caldera plain below. From the rim at 2290 meters, one descends by land rover the 610 meters to the crater floor--what looked like an ants from the crater rim turn out to be the hundreds of wildebeest and other animals that constantly inhabit the crater. The 259 square kilometer crater is fed by a number of creeks and springs supplying a constant source of water. Animals inhabit the crater year round due to its abundant water supply. Excellent safaris can therefore be undertaken any time of the year. The crater's natural fortress-like ring shape has also provided protection from the worst predator in Tanzania--Man. There is officially only one way in and out of the crater; and the Tanzanian National Park Services maintains tight guard over those entering and leaving the park. On the crater floor is the only place in Tanzania where Black Rhinos still exist. If we are lucky we will see one of the eleven...
Close to the Crater is also the mountains of Oldonyo lengai (9,654 feet). This active volcano is a steep climb, but is an excellent add-on to an extended safari.
Accommodation is provided either in a lodge on the rim or in a camp site. Both locations provide striking views of the expanse of the crater.
Ngorongoro, like Lake Manyara, is one the way to/from the Serengeti, it is best viewed over 1-2 days.
