The Serengeti is an immense, sprawling reserve. It connects with the Masi Mara reserve in southwestern Kenya, forming a huge natural expanse for wildlife to roam and migrate. The 14,800 square kilometers of the Serengeti is largely grassland, interspersed with forests, lakes and rolling hills. During the dry season the wildlife concentrates their activities to the wetter parts of the park making for easier viewing. During the migration season, thousands of wildebeest and other animals can be seen moving northward in search of grass and food.
All major animals can be found in the Serengeti, except rhino. However, the Serengeti is the best place to see the larger cats, leopard and lion. There are also large numbers of the shy cheetah.
The Serengeti is also the site of the digs by the Leakey's where the bones of some the earliest humans were found. This site as well as traditional settlements of the Maasi tribes make interesting side trips.
The Serengeti park gate is a 2-4 hour drive from Arusha over tarmac, gravel and dirt road. We recommend spending at least 2-3 days in the park, otherwise you spend the majority of your time driving to the park--instead of enjoying it. Both Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater make good 1-2 day stop overs on the way to or from the Serengeti--they both lie on the road to the Serengeti from Arusha.
Accommodation is either in a lodge or campsite. NOTE: the lodge in the Serengeti is often booked solid in the high season (July-December). Advance booking of up to five months is recommended. Campsites are easier to come by, but advance booking is also recommended.
All prices include all park fees, salaries of guides/porters/cook, all meals during the safari, equipment and transfer to/from Arusha or Moshi. Our Land Rovers seat 4-6 people. Smaller groups may request a private Land Rover for an additional fee. Tips and items of a personal nature are not included.
